As the world calmly rejuvinates itself back onto order from a long period of isolation and restlessness after this year’s global pandemic, comically known as Miss Rona, ruined the routine of life as we know it, the virtual world of music stans were recently shook by the bloom of good news that came from one of pop music’s most celebrated pop artist, comically known as Katy Perry, who announced the upcoming release of a new single named ‘Daisies’, out this May 15, 2020.
The song, which has surprisingly dodged the threat of leaks and went under the radar of industry insiders, is set to act as the lead single for her fifth studio record, referred by default as KP5, expected to come out summer of this year after Katy gives birth to her first daughter with actor Orlando Bloom. In the promotional photos that came with the surprise reveal, Katy boasts her new signature color of blonde while placed in a bed-like garden of greenery dominated by daisies, with matching smiles that can be understood as a balance of confidence and tranquility she achieved from finally freeing herself of the negativity and ultimately embracing love. In recent weeks before ‘Daisies’, an unreleased song called Smile featuring rapper Diddy leaked, prompting many to prematurely assume it will be the lead single for the new album. It remains unclear whether the song will remain part of KP5 or tossed out of her official releases.
‘Daisies’, like her predecessors of lead singles, will set the lyrical tone and thematic trajectory of what we could expect from the new record, believed to have been teasefully experimented last year by a multitude of ‘droplets’ that Katy and Capitol Records devised to test the waters of what particular sounds today’s audience currently demands. Bets are placed on Never Really Over being the potential candidate to be the model for the musical direction of the new album, after it came out May of last year to great success and critical acclaim.
To prepare herself for another pop photosynthesis, Katy is imploring the aide of A&R Chris Anokute, who supervised the rollout of her first two major pop records One of the Boys (2008) and Teenage Dream (2010), the latter of which granted Katheryn the elusive title of being the only female artist to score five consecutive #1 hits from the same album. Chris then after, had also headed the releases of other hits-certified records and recordings of other artists such as Iggy Azalea (The New Classic; Fancy), Fifth Harmony (7/27; Work From Home), Bebe Rexha (The Monster) and Zara Larsson (So Good). For this record, Chris and Katy seemingly took opportunity of using the nostalgic 10th year anniversary of the “daisy dukes” of all summer hits from the 10’s, California Gurls, as fertilizer to the release of ‘Daisies’, to great projection. The tag #DAISIES reached the top spot of Trending topics on Twitter worldwide, indication of buzz and interest for the song.
The news also branched out heavy speculations that the single will be a surprise collaboration with another pop muse, Taylor Swift, after the Me! singer posted a photo of her in daisies-print sweater few minutes after the announcement was made. The two last joined forces in Swift’s You Need to Calm Down music video to mark an end on their feud that originated some 5 years ago.
‘Daisies’ revelation had reactivated the gleeful cheers and excitement of everyone in the fandom, including those who cannot wait to finally unravel onto new aesthetics and visuals this new era will surely deliver, as always has been the case for Katy. As the hype elevates and the due date comes nearer, the success of this single will leave a remarkable impression on how effective the observations of Katy’s team were about navigating the nature of a changed musical demographics, and will once and for all prove if Katycats still have the charisma to catapult their fave onto the great peaks she has been denied from lately.
